.: History of TPJChoir :.
The
Tampines Junior College Choir
made its debut in 1987 and has since then come a very
long way. It was established with the
vision of
promoting a life-long interest in singing and character
building in the areas of discipline and team
spirit. The choir
has developed rapidly, chiefly through embarking on
increasingly challenging tasks.
Besides performing
at college functions, it also holds an annual public
concert entitled "Plaisir de Chanson".
Under
the leadership of our
Choral Director
Mr. Nelson Kwei, the choir has maintained its high choral standard throughout
the years and our various achievements bear testimony to
this. The choir embarked on a tour to Europe in 1993 and
participated in the Bournemouth Music Festival as part
of the prestigious Bournemouth Festival of Arts. We were
awarded the distinction of being named the "Best Adult
Choir of The Year".
Locally, in 1992, the TPJC Choir's first public
performance was a success, and the Choir capped it all
by emerging the champion in the Cantata Competition
organised by the Young Musician's Society, Singapore. In
1993, the choir received a Gold Certificate of
Distinction in its first appearance in the bi-annual
Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Choral Competition. The
SYF is a prestigious event organized by the Ministry of
Education, Singapore, to showcase talent in the youths
of Singapore. All participating schools and junior
colleges qualify for the prestigious Gold Certificate of
Distinction if they attain a certain level of
performance. The Choir continued to achieve this
prestigious distinction award in the subsequent 1995,
1997, 1999 and 2001 competitions.
It was
selected as one of the top 5 choirs to enter the Finals
of the SYF in 2003.
Singapore hosted the World Trade Organisation
(WTO) Conference in December 1996 and the choir was
again privileged to perform before an international
audience which included visiting Heads of State and
cabinet ministers when we participated in the Closing
Show for the Conference. In June 1997, the Choir was one
of two selected Junior College Choirs which did a
recording of specially arranged community songs for the
nation¡¯s National Day Parade. The Choir was also
privileged to be the only choir invited to perform at
the 1998 National Day Rally by the Prime Minister of
Singapore (which is our equivalent of the State of the
Union Address) where our performance was well received.
The Choir was also honoured to perform at the North-East
CDC's National Day Dinner on 7 August 1999 where the
Guest-of-Honour was Rear-Admiral Teo
Chee Hean, Minister of Education.
The Choir performed
the Mikado on 23rd May 2000 at the Victoria Concert
Hall. This was a College Fund Raising Project
spearheaded by the Choir. We helped to raise S$270,000
for the college - a significant indication of the
success of this opera. In July 2001, the Choir also went
on a competition tour to Spittal an der Drau, Austria.
Out of 75 participants, we were chosen as one of the top
10 finalists, and eventually emerged 7th in the
Folksong Category. The Choir also
participated in the 2002 Choir Olympics at Busan, Korea,
where it garnered a bronze and silver award. In Dec
2003, it obtained 2 Gold Awards at the International
Choral Festival at Genting, Malaysia. In addition, the
Choir participated in a choral exchange programme cum
performance tour in Hong Kong in Dec 2004.
The TPJC Choir has indeed gained
much from its public performances and overseas tours.
With continued enthusiasm and commitment to excellence,
the choir is on its journey to greater heights in music
making.
In Dec
2005, Tampines Junior College Choir
went to Shah Alam for the international choral
competition ,"A Voyage of Songs 2005".The choir achieved
3 golds in different categories,'Open Mixed
Voices','Open Equal Voices' and 'Folklore. In addition,
the Male Chorus have done us proud by entering the grand
finals of the competition. Although we were only a
finalist, it was truely an eye-opener for
us.
In 2006,the choir won further recognition by
taking part in a renowned international choral
competition "Festa Musicale" in Olomouc from June 7-June
11 . The choir bagged Gold Awards from the categories
they've participated, 'Mixed Youth', 'Mixed Youth
Superior' and 'Open Equal Voices'. Once again, the
TPJChoir male chorus done us proud by being one of the 5
finalists for the competition, competing against
renowned choirs from different regions.

For the
Tampines Junior College choir, 2007 has been a fruitful
year with several successful ventures and performances
to boot. The choir's first performance of the year was
as Anderson Junior College choir's guest choir at their
annual concert, VoyAJe: A New
Journey Begins, held on April 16th. The performance
was an enriching and fulfilling experience for the choir
as we performed to a full house of very appreciative
audience at the Esplanade. TPJC choir also clinched a
silver award May 8th in the Singapore Youth
Festival held biannually amidst fierce and intense
competition from the other Junior Colleges. The choir's
annual concert, Plaisir De Chanson, or the pleasure of
song was a highly successful event as well. Held in
Victoria Concert Hall, the concert was the result of
innumerable hours of hard work and practice by the
members, teachers and conductors. The choir also took
part in the International Choral Festival- A
Voyage of Songs from 12 to 16 July 2007 held
in Pattaya, Thailand and obtained two gold awards in
Category A - Open Mixed Choirs and Category F –
Folklore. The choir grew significantly since the start
of the year and progressed to become one that its
members are proud to belong to, after going through
setbacks and hurdles together only to overcome them and
emerge stronger and more bonded than before.
